As a backpacking traveller, Shirley Mancino completes small figurative and abstract watercolour paintings. In her home studio, she becomes bolder and more experimental, working larger, with both watercolour and mixed media. She takes advantage of found materials to make marks and include in her work: bubble wrap, spackle, eggshells, sand, newsprint, etc. Her soul “sings” when she works abstractly. Consequently, she always aims for abstract paintings and needs to push herself to stay loose and spontaneous.
Her mission is to paint beauty and to leave something to the viewers’ imagination so that they are not only engaged by her work but also finishing what she starts. Her response to cruelty, suffering and sorrow is to remind the world of the face of beauty, which can restore our tranquillity, cleanse our hearts and lead us to the path of truth. Beauty is a tonic like no other.
